And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God’s will. ~ 2 Corinthians 8:5
Have you ever tried to do things your own way?
When the focus is on trying to do what you want instead of what God’s will is for the situation?
Truth be told, I am somewhat of a “control freak.” There, I said it. Whew, I feel a little better now.
You know you are a control freak when you will do whatever it takes to make sure that things are done “just right”–whether it is the dishes, the laundry, the project at work, or even your hair.
The catch twenty-two with this though is that people around you like that you things get done and that they can count on you when the going gets tough, but it can also frustrate and tear down some of those same relationships, not to mention the fact that it keeps us focused on what “we” can do.
When our focus is on what we can do, handle and get done then the weight of the burden rests completely on our shoulders. We start to feel the weight of all these things we’ve picked up along the way because we are get it done girls who like things done the “right way”.
Each step we take throughout the day seems harder and heavier until we feel like we can’t take another single step. In our pursuit to do things our way we somehow managed to sidestep God. We left Him out and while we’ve been carrying the weight of getting things done “just right” He’s been waiting for us to simply call out to Him and ask for help.
We can choose to go our own way or we can stop, call out to God, and ask for His will…for that decision, for that day, for our lives.
It sounds simple enough, and truly it is, if we take the time to lay down our own agenda and our own need to do things our way.
I’ve been trying to do things “my way” for many years now, and it’s finally started to sink in (through God’s Word, through friends, through prayer, and through my dear husband) that I have been trying so hard to “control” my life (and many of the facets of it), that I’ve missed out on the joy of letting God lead the way.
In my pursuit to go my own way I lost sight of the fact that I’m not in control and never have been.
In realizing this there’s been this huge sense of relief that by seeking God’s will for my life I can trust that no matter what comes my way that day, that it is supposed to be there, that I am being obedient, and that He is pleased.
My life verse speaks directly to this point and has been a beautiful reminder to me when I start to lose focus again.
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 NLT
I’m done trying to go my own way, it’s time to go where He sends me and rest in the center of His will.
What about you?
What ways are you trying to go your own way when it comes to your life?
What can you do today to seek God’s will instead of your own?
